Climate Change

Many businesses are taking action and setting goals in relation to climate change, ethical sourcing and waste management. We encourage customers to undertake due diligence to ensure your products are responsible and sustainable in terms of sourcing, production and throughout the full product life cycle. 
 
Over the last 100 years, scientists have observed that the Earth’s climate has rapidly changed. The Bureau of Meteorology and NIWA data shows the average temperature in Australia and New Zealand has risen approximately 1°C since 1910. 
 
Even this slight change can have a significant impact. Activities, like burning fossil fuels, deforestation and agriculture are major causes of climate change. The burning of fossil fuels release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the earth’s atmosphere. Combined with other greenhouse gases, CO2 prevents solar radiation from escaping, and raises the temperature.

Geothermal steam

In tissue production, making steam is the most energy intensive part. Thanks to its unique location within a geothermal field, our manufacturing site at Kawerau in New Zealand is the only tissue mill in the world to use geothermal steam for tissue production, instead of making steam with gas-fired boilers. Through switching to geothermal steam and changing our manufacturing process at our Kawerau plant, we have reduced manufacturing greenhouse gas emissions by 46%.

Renewable energy

Over 65% of Tork tissue products are manufactured in New Zealand and life cycle analysis has shown they are produced using up to 76% renewable energy.4 This is a result of using geothermal steam in the paper making process and the high proportion (approx 80%) of renewable energy in the grid in New Zealand. We are committed to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels to further reduce our impact and have set a target to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2025 from our 2015 base.

Tropical Peatland Free

In 2018 we introduced our Tropical Peatland free policy and No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation (NDPE) commitment in response to the extreme climate impacts from draining and establishing pulpwood plantations on carbon-rich tropical peatlands. We are the only tissue manufacturer with an NDPE commitment.

Responsible forestry

Forests play an important role in regulating the climate, absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere, releasing oxygen and storing carbon in trees and soil. Responsible forestry and fibre procurement and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification contribute to mitigating climate change by promoting sustainable forest management and protecting the function of the forest. We encourage our customers to take similar action to limit their emissions through the purchase and consumption of tissue paper products.
